Franz Nemschak verstarb am 17. M\u00e4rz 1992 im 85. Lebensjahr nach langem schweren Leiden. Nemschak war der Wiederbegr\u00fcnder und langj\u00e4hrige Leiter des \u00d6sterreichischen Instituts f\u00fcr Wirtschaftsforschung von 1945 bis 1971. Wie kein anderer beeinflu\u00dfte und pr\u00e4gte er die Arbeit und die Stellung des Instituts. Sein Ziel war eine leistungsf\u00e4hige, praxisorientierte und politisch unabh\u00e4ngige Wirtschaftsforschung, die dem obersten Ziel, dem Gesamtinteresse \u00d6sterreichs und seiner Bev\u00f6lkerung verpflichtet ist. Die Funktion der Wirtschaftsforschung sah er nicht auf der akademischen Ebene, sondern in der Bereitstellung von sachlichen Entscheidungsunterlagen f\u00fcr wirtschaftspolitische Weichenstellungen. Obwohl er sich prinzipiell \u00f6ffentlicher Empfehlungen in konkreten Anla\u00dff\u00e4llen enthielt, z\u00f6gerte er nie, eine klare Stellung zu beziehen, wenn es ihm das langfristige Gedeihen der \u00f6sterreichischen Wirtschaft geboten erscheinen lie\u00df. So war er einer der engagiertesten Bef\u00fcrworter der Ann\u00e4herung \u00d6sterreichs an die EWG schon in den sechziger Jahren. Ebenso war er, vor und w\u00e4hrend des Prager Fr\u00fchlings, ein Advokat von tiefgreifenden Reformen in Osteuropa, als welcher er sogar nach Moskau eingeladen war. Nemschak hinterlie\u00df seinen Nachfolgern ein wohlgeordnetes und fruchtbringendes Lebenswerk. Wenn auch in manchem die Fragestellungen und Methoden ebenso wie die politische Umgebung \u00fcber Nemschak hinausgegangen sind, wies er uns doch Wege und Grunds\u00e4tze, von denen wir uns noch heute leiten lassen. Wir verdanken Franz Nemschak sehr viel.
