It is estimated that the number of companies rose from 248 to 390 and the turnover from \u20ac 1.5 billion to \u20ac 8.2 billion between 1993 and 2011. In these years, employment more than doubled (from 11,000 to 29,000 workers). The sector's increasing internationalisation is shown by the continuous rise of its export rate. A structural change is taking place that has clean technologies \u2013 especially in the energy field \u2013 gain ground over downstream technologies.
