According to an estimate, the number of enterprises rose from 248 in 1993 to 375 in 2007. Their sales figures almost quadrupled during this period (from \u20ac 1.5 billion to \u20ac 6 billion) and employment doubled (from 11,000 to about 22,000 workers). The segment's increasing internationalisation is shown by the constant growth of its export rate. The segment is undergoing structural change, which accords ever more weight to clean technologies \u2013 especially in the field of energy \u2013 over downstream technologies.
