Transformations in the Energy System

WIFO Consultant Stefan Schleicher Contributed to the Global UN DESA Conference in New York

Austria was represented by WIFO consultant Stefan Schleicher at a conference organised by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) on the global research network Project LINK in New York.

His contribution on new approaches for the modelling radical transformations in the energy systems reflects current WIFO research work on a deeper understanding of the policy challenges related to energy and climate.

Project LINK is an international cooperation for econometric modelling, coordinated jointly by the Economic Analysis & Policy Division of UN DESA and the University of Toronto.

The current decline in economic momentum in the global economy cannot yet be adequately explained, according to the main findings of this year's conference in New York. However, a possible new crisis in the banking sector, the emerging conflicts in international trade and not least the uncertainties associated with Brexit leave many questions about the flattening of economic activity unanswered. From the expected consequences of disruptive technologies to the already noticeable consequences of extreme weather events due to climate change, attempts have been made to fill this explanation gap.
