Weekly WIFO Economic Index (WWWI)

The current assessment of the Weekly WIFO Economic Index (WWWI) points to an increasing weakening of the economic recovery: On a monthly average the indicator fell slightly in October (–3.5 percent). For the year 2020, taking into account the restrictions imposed by the government (second lockdown from 3 November 2020, tightened on 17 November), a current WIFO Research Brief also provides a preliminary assessment for the year as a whole.

The Weekly WIFO Economic Index (WWWI) measures the real economic activity of the Austrian economy on a weekly basis. It is based on 14 weekly and seven monthly indicators, and one quarterly indicator for the Austrian economy.

Die aktuelle Auswertung des WWWI deutet auf eine zunehmende Abschwächung der Konjunkturerholung hin: Im Monatsdurchschnitt sank der Indikator im Oktober leicht (–3,5%). Unter Berücksichtigung der behördlichen Einschränkungen (zweiter Lockdown ab 3. November 2020 mit Verschärfung ab 17. November) ergibt die auf dem WWWI aufbauende Einschätzung für das gesamte Jahr 2020 einen Rückgang des BIP von 8%. Die Modellberechnungen für das Jahr 2020 aus dem Cluster dynamischer Faktormodelle (CDFM) ergeben eine ähnliche Größenordnung. Neben entstehungs- und verwendungsseitigen Komponenten der VGR enthält das Modell auch eine Echtzeiteinschätzung für die Verteilungsseite.
