Matthias Firgo is Senior Economist at WIFO and has been working in the Research Group "Structural Change and Regional Development"
since 2012. After studying economics at Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna) and at the University of Illinois
he was working and teaching as a research associate at the WU Vienna. After finishing his PhD at the WU Vienna he has dedicated
his research at WIFO to questions on structural change and economic growth at the regional level, to topics on regional competitiveness
and territorial capital, as well as to spatial aspects of digitisation. Recent research projects have focussed on the relation
between digitisation and employment growth in urban and rural regions, as well as on the evaluation of development support
programmes for rural regions in Austria. Matthias Firgo is a board member of Gesellschaft für Regionalforschung (the German
speaking section of the European Regional Science Association – ERSA). He has published scientific papers in renowned international
journals in the fields of industrial and regional economics, such as International Journal of Industrial Organization or Regional
Science and Urban Economics.
